ABOUT FREEMASONRY

 "A Speculative  Science based on an Operative Art" 

 Freemasonry is  a fraternity designed to teach morality and ethics, and train good men to make themselves of greater service to themselves, their families and their communities. They are taught through an ancient and time proven "system of morality, veiled in allegory and illustrated by symbols." 

 Freemasonry is  the oldest and largest fraternity in the world dating back many centuries to the stonemasons who built the great cathedrals of Europe in the Middle Ages with its legends and rituals emanating from the time of the building of King Solomon's Temple and beyond to ancient Egypt.  Its membership is now comprised of men from all walks and stations of life. The practices and procedures formalized in those ancient times remain unaltered and are faithfully observed by Freemasons across all parts of the globe. 

 Freemasonry is not  a religion, but it encourages its members to be active in their chosen faith. It subscribes to no partisan politics, but encourages its members to be active in civic concerns.  It is not a charity as such, but it promotes charity in its members. 

 A Freemason is  a man who endeavours to improve his character. He is a member of the world's largest fraternal organization, enjoying the brotherhood of Freemasons in his community, and welcomed by Freemasons anywhere in the world. 

  Expressing a desire to join the fraternity is the first step to becoming a Freemason. The initiative must come from the inquirer as Freemasons are not permitted to solicit prospective members.

     To be eligible for membership in the jurisdiction of the Grand Lodge of Ancient Free and Accepted Masons of British Columbia and Yukon Region an applicant must satisfy the following qualifications:

1.   Have the ability to read and write English,

2.  Have resided in BC or the Yukon for the previous twelve months,

3 . Have resided in the jurisdiction of the constituent Lodge for the previous six months,

4.  He "...........  shall be a man of the full age of 21 years, free born and capable of supporting himself and those dependent on him."

5.  Be, in clear conscience, able to answer the following questions in the affirmative:

     a. Do you seriously and upon your honour declare that uninfluenced by mercenary or other unworthy motives, and unbiased by the improper solicitations of friends, you freely and voluntarily offer yourself a candidate for the mysteries of Freemasonry?

      b. Do you seriously and upon your honour declare that you are prompted to solicit the privileges of Freemasonry by a favourable opinion conceived of the Institution and a desire for knowledge?

       c.  Do you believe in the existence of a Supreme Being?

  Initiates are required to pay an initiation fee.  Members pay annual dues and are to be actively involved in the working of the Lodge. This requires a commitment of two to four evenings a month and the effort to study and understand Freemasonry's philosophy, history, ritual and practices. The member can only get out what he puts into it.
